China produced 5.83 mln t of alumina in May 2020, of which 5.58 mln t was SGA, with average daily output of 180 kt, up 0.1% m-o-m but down 6.54% y-o-y. During the first five months of 2020, China produced 27.14 mln t of SGA, down 8.19% y-o-y. Domestic refinery production cuts beginning in late April in addition to maintenance in Henan and Guangxi resulted in declining alumina output during May. However, boosted by a slight uptick in prices, several refineries increased output, seeing daily alumina output grow by 200 t m-o-m in May.
As of this week, domestic alumina capacity in operation (SGA) reached 65.58 mtpy. SMM forecast domestic alumina (SGA) output at 5.44 mln t in June, with average daily output lifting to 181 kt – driven by production resuming after maintenance as well as output growth from SPIC Zunyi Refinery.
