Shanxi New Energy Magnesium smelter suspended magnesium production on 2nd April 2021 due to an upgrade to rotary kilns. The company is set to restart on 15th April, consequently its April production is estimated at 300 t down by 300 t m-o-m.

Designed with magnesium capacity of 15 ktpy, the company produced 7.2 kt of magnesium in 2020 and its 2021 output is expected to be stable.

Most Shaanxi magnesium smelters are under pressure from rising coal prices, continued weak semi-coke prices and slow sales of semi-coke. Shaanxi smelters raised their magnesium quotations by RMB200/t to RMB15,300~15,400/t on Thursday. Following this move, Shanxi smelters raised their quotations to RMB15,400~15,500/t. Some transactions were made at this price level, driven by fixed orders.
