Fugu County in Yulin is China’s largest primary magnesium production and supply base. Leveraging oil-rich coal from the Shenfu Coalfield, it has developed an innovative “coking semi-coke + magnesium smelting” integrated model over more than two decades, using semi-coke tail gas as renewable energy and forming a closed-loop industrial chain. This system spans semi-coke production, “tail gas + waste heat” power generation, ferrosilicon smelting, primary magnesium, alloy casting and processing, recycling, and magnesium slag utilization – creating a circular economy cluster in Fugu.
The county has registered magnesium capacity of 802.5 ktpy and produced 557.7 kt of magnesium in 2025 (51% of China’s total). It supports domestic demand from sectors such as NEVs, rail, aerospace, and 3C electronics, while also supplying the global market.
Magnesium alloy output in Fugu is expected to exceed 100 kt in 2026.
