China produced 28.4 kt of NPI (in Ni metal) in April 2023, seeing actual NPI production at 243 kt, down by 4.7% m-o-m and down by 25% y-o-y.
Despite improved NPI prices in April, some domestic NPI smelters were still operating under production cuts due to limited demand from stainless steel producers amid thin profit margins. In addition, some NPI smelters performed maintenance during April. Industry commentators forecast domestic NPI production to rise to 30.3 kt (in Ni metal) in May 2023.
