Sichuan’s Aba Aluminium smelter was forced to cut its capacity by 24 kt or 12% of its total due to the power outages caused by recent mud flows. Overhauls and restarts are scheduled in three months.

The smelter produced 190 kt of primary aluminium in 2018 – its 2019 output target is also set at 190 kt. However, the company may fail to achieve this target due to production cuts. The smelter produced 110 kt of primary aluminium during the first seven months of 2019, with August output estimated at 16 kt. It holds 10 kt aluminium ingot in stock at present.

Mainstream aluminium ingot transaction prices were RMB 14,210~14,310/t at Shanghai warehouses on Monday, a decline of RMB 40/t on the previous trading day.
